In 1836, Texas won its independence from Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto. There is now one of the tallest monuments in the world marking this site, designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark; take the 500-foot high elevator to its Observation Deck for a birds’ eye view of this thriving metropolis. A museum is located in the base of the monument, filled with a collection of artwork, books and artifacts representing that time in history. You can take a 2.5 mile hiking tour of the battleground or relax in the Theater and watch a thirty minute film, Texas Forever! The 1,200-acre San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site is also home to the Battleship Texas which is available for tours.
